An introduction to playing Gomoku

Bring your attention to one round of Gomoku. Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Practice beyond the first move

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Understand the aim

Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Start with a deliberate move.

From the start of a round

  1. Player 1 places the first stone on an empty intersection.
  2. Player 2 places a stone and turns alternate.
  3. Look for open lines and block your opponent’s threats.
  4. A winning line immediately ends the round.

Your inputs

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Look at the feedback after the action.

Put the rules into context

Four consecutive stones with an empty point at both ends creates two possible finishing moves. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Take a moment to compare.

Pay attention to this rule

This is freestyle Gomoku, not Renju: there are no special forbidden opening or double-three rules. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
