Read before your next round of Futoshiki

Futoshiki gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Look at what changes after your first action. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

Practice beyond the first move

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Refer to the controls when needed.

The goal to keep in mind

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

The playing sequence

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

Learn from a sample situation

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

Check this before moving on

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. A different version of the game may use a different rule. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
