Find your footing in Nim

Take a moment with Nim before moving to another game. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Begin with the same-device two players mode shown on the page. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Take a closer look while playing

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Make the next step deliberately.

Your objective

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

How your actions work

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A closer look at one example

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Look for the relevant detail.

Avoid this misunderstanding

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
